A history of Britain (1): Beginnings

26 March 2013 by Jan Huisman in Antiquity Documentary News Society - No Comments

The first part of A history of Britain, a quality documentary on the British history. In this episode narrater Simon Schama start his story in the 4th millenium BC, the earliest date were there is proof of human presence on the island. The society of this pre-Roman perdiod is reconstructed, but thereafter the story turns to the Roman occupation, starting with the invasion of the Emperor Claudius (54-68).

Romans came and went, but left their mark on the culture and society of the Romano-British population. After the Romans evacuated the island in the first decennium of the 5th century, life went on mostly the way it did. But soon thereafter there was a new invader, the Saxons and Angels.
