Episode one: Who were the Vikings
Vikings with their known helmets, boats and Norse religion seam to suddenly appear in European history as they started to sack monasteries and cities at the end of the 8th century. In fact, Vikings have a long prehistoric heritage. This mysterious world is examined in this episode.
Episode two: Trading Empire
Vikings explored, conquered and traded. Their trading networks stretched to Bagdad, China and Ireland, their tradinggoods ranged from amber to slaves. This episode examines this trading empire.
Episode three: End of the Viking age
In this last episode, the Norse voyages of discovery are traced, to Greenland and Iceland. The desolated islands weren’t pillaged and no trade could be done. So the Norsemen colonized the land. In the 10th century Danish kings and Christian conversions traveled as far as Newfoundland. Back in Europe, England, the Vikings conquered England and ruled a large part of Albion under the Danelaw. Finally the Viking rule in England came to an end, with its last ruler of the legendary king Cnut.
