Austria (10): Peace is promised, but war is delivered

This documentary focuses on Austria during the Third Reich, from the period just before the outbreak of the Second World War to the fall of Warsaw.

How the Nazi’s tricked the civilian population to think that they had peaceful intentions is explained with the use of video footage and interviews. In Vienna, life seemed to continue on a peace-economy in the early months of 1939, with fashion shows and art exhibitions. Goebbels promised a radio and television for everyone. Hitler visited Vienna and attended opera’s in his civilian-suit, to show his allegedly peaceful intentions: the future seemed prosperous.

But Europa wasn’t in peace; a war between fascists and socialists was fought in Spain, with Austrians fighting on both sides. The Nazi’s forged a pact with the Soviet-Union, clearing the path for war.
