Battlefield Vietnam (1): Dien Bien Phu

The first part of the Battlefield Vietnam series covers the post-war era of French rule in Indochina (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia). After the Japanese defeat in World War II the Vietminh proclaimed the independence of the Vietnam. Chairman of the Communist party Ho Chi Minh gained international support, but the French tried to regain control over Indochina. At first by political means, but soon thereafter with military oppression. Soon the conflict escalated. France sends more troops, with massive military aid of America. The Vietminh were supported by the China and Soviet Union. The conflict climaxed in the hills of the North-Vietnamese village Dien Bien Phu. The French defeat there marked the end of the colonial era. But the war in Vietnam had only just begon.

The Battlefield series are wellknown for their militaristic approach. Although the conflict is described mostly from an American perspective, its still worth a look.
